1/1/11 – Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World

This was possibly the biggest film that I missed of 2010, and so I was keen to catch up and find out what all the fuss was about. Being a fan of Edgar Wright from his previous work, I was expecting a witty, clever and ultimately feel good film – and mostly this is what I got, as Scott does battle with the evil ex-boyfriends – sorry, evil EXES – of the girl of his dreams, Ramona.

We are living in the golden era of the comic book geek, and they don’t come much geekier or knowledgeable than Wright. The references are packed in thick and fast, but they don’t detract from what is at heart a simple morality tale, given a modern kick up the ass, a great soundtrack and told with intelligence and wit. The obvious comparison is with Kill Bill, and the set pieces here are just as impressive, even if it flirts dangerously with having one too many plot extensions and twists towards the end which made me lose focus slightly.

Overall, this film zips along with plenty of smiles, and even though it doesn’t have a lot that’s new to say, perhaps that’s because we’ve played too many video games ourselves and we know how they’re going to end.
